With a focus on opportunity and fun activity for all in our town centre through live performance, open rehearsals, creative workshops and availability of The Stove’s Digital Suite. The annual Dumfries Music Conference (DMC) brings this together with creative collaboration, expert opinion and other happenings to educate, inspire and entertain.

Rappers Delight during Radio DMCImages: Brave New Words open mic performance, Rudi Zygadlo gig organised by Electric Fields at the Stove, Radio DMC with Melissa Gunn, Rhiannon Dewar and Dave Miller, and live music at the Dumfries Music Conference 2015.

The Stove’s programme is made up of five strands of activity, Future Vision, Word, Music, Food and Visual – these help inform and direct our current core areas of interest. If you have an interesting idea that you think would fit into one of our strands that you would like to make happen at the Stove, details of how to submit project ideas are available here.

My story is a long one, so I’ll start from the more interesting bit. This is my hometown, but I had to move south, where at one point, I graduated from Bournemouth and Poole college with a Btec Extended Diploma in Popular Music Performance and Production. I also studied Live and Studio Sound in Southampton for a year before I had to drop out and move back up here for the sake of my mental health.

I am a talented vocal performer and I am capable of recording music to a high quality as long as I have the equipment to do so – which I do not. As far as I am aware, nobody in the area wants to hire someone with my particular qualifications or experience.

I keep seeing posts from an old choir buddy of mine on Facebook about this place, so today I decided to give you a google, and I’m scratching my head wondering how/if I can get involved in such a way that the education I’ve had no longer goes to waste.

      Hi Grace,

Thanks for getting in touch – nice to hear from you! There are a couple of projects that might be of interest to you, but in the first instance it may be worthwhile dropping an email to Martin O’Neill, who is part of our curatorial team and looks after the music side of things at the Stove, Martinthe stove.org. He is also part of the Dumfries Music Conference, more details available on their Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/DumfriesMusicConference/ – they host an annual event, usually about October time.

We have an upcoming series of workshops with blueprint100 if you are within their age bracket – under 30! – including the Song Factory, a series of workshops focused on songwriting and recording at Lovers Lane Studios. Details: http://www.facebook.com/blueprint100.dumfries/

You can also drop in on our monthly open mic nights, Brave New Words, on the last Friday of the month at 7pm for poetry and songs if you would like to get a feel for what goes on here and meet some of the people! You would be made very welcome.

Hope to see you at a Stove event in the future.
      Katie
